UK preparing protective measures for commercial activities in the Falkland Islands
London, October 13 (Hibya) - The UK government is preparing new measures to protect British companies and individuals against Argentine extraterritorial sanctions targeting lawful commercial activities connected to the Falkland Islands.
The UK government announced that it would introduce new measures to protect companies investing in the Falkland Islands and individuals and organizations engaged in lawful economic activities in the region against Argentina’s extraterritorial measures.
In a statement issued on October 13, 2026 by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, it was stated that regulations would be prepared under the Protection of Trading Interests (PTI) legislation.
The measures are intended to ensure that British individuals and companies can make commercial decisions regarding their lawful activities around the Falkland Islands in accordance with UK law. The statement said the regulations were not intended to restrict lawful commercial activities conducted by British companies with Argentina, but solely to provide protection against extraterritorial measures targeting activities connected to the Falkland Islands.
The UK government said it was in close contact with affected companies and would provide support to businesses. The government also emphasized its support for the right of the people of the Falkland Islands to determine their own future and to develop their natural resources for their economic benefit.
UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the government would act if Argentina attempted to obstruct lawful British commercial activities. Reynolds said British interests would be protected under the Protection of Trading Interests legislation and that contact with affected businesses would continue.
UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said support for the Falkland Islands remained firm and described attempts to pressure companies and individuals engaged in legitimate commercial activities as unacceptable. Miliband said companies should be able to make lawful commercial decisions without the threat of political pressure.
The statement said the regulations were intended to be brought into force through secondary legislation as soon as possible and to begin being implemented before the end of the year. It was noted that the measures would apply only to Argentine extraterritorial measures affecting the Falkland Islands.
