Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reacted to statements made by Democratic Party (PD) Secretary Elly Schlein regarding the attempted attack on journalist Sigfrido Ranucci.

In a post on her social media account, Meloni referred to remarks Schlein made ahead of the Party of European Socialists (PES) Congress held in Amsterdam on October 18, 2025.

Meloni said that at the time Schlein had expressed support for Ranucci, stating: "Democracy is in danger, freedom of expression is in danger when the far right is in power."

Meloni also noted that, during a television program on July 27, 2026, Schlein stated: "I never established any connection between the government and those behind the attack."

The Italian Prime Minister argued that for months Schlein and some figures on the political left had, through insinuations and indirect statements, created a narrative linking the government to the incident. Meloni claimed that these statements had damaged Italy's reputation in the eyes of the international community.

In her post, Meloni said: "Words carry weight. So do insinuations. Anyone who chose to cast a shadow over the government and Italy should not deny the truth today. They should simply apologize."

The debate surrounding Schlein's remarks emerged in Italian politics following the attempted attack on journalist Sigfrido Ranucci.
