Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made statements regarding the events following the death of Abderrahim Fakir in Bologna.

Meloni stressed that anyone responsible for Abderrahim Fakir’s death must be identified “with the utmost diligence,” adding: “The truth must be investigated thoroughly, without prejudice and without granting privileges to anyone.”

Meloni also said that the events could not justify violence against security forces, stating: “Those who used this incident as an excuse to set the city on fire, attack police officers and create an atmosphere of violence that endangered citizens’ safety were not seeking the truth, but conflict.”

Meloni said that targeting security forces was “a grave irresponsibility,” adding: “Targeting thousands of women and men in uniform means targeting those who serve Italy every day with professionalism, dedication and courage.”
