Bukele: Every nation chooses its own path
San Salvador, July 14 (Hibya) – El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele commented on constitutional reform, unlimited presidential re-election and debates surrounding democracy.
El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele stated that in parliamentary democracies people do not directly elect the head of government, arguing that such systems cannot automatically be considered more democratic than direct elections.
Bukele said the constitutional amendment allowing unlimited re-election in El Salvador was adopted by a legislative majority formed through strong public support in elections. He added that the country's elections had been monitored by international observers and that no country or international organization had concluded that the elections were not free or democratic.
"Ultimately, every nation chooses its own path," Bukele said, adding that different countries have different systems of government and that constitutional amendments are carried out through different procedures in many countries.
