Israel reacts to Irish national team’s pre-match conduct
Jerusalem, September 4 (Hibya) - Israeli authorities issued a statement regarding the Irish national team bowing their heads during the Israeli national anthem.
Israel’s official social media account shared a post regarding what happened before the match between the Irish and Israeli national football teams.
The post stated that Irish footballers saluted Nazi Germany in 1939, while in 2026 Irish players bowed their heads during the Israeli national anthem. Israel compared the images from the two periods and accused the Irish side of “moral blindness.”
The post also said that the Israeli national team wore black armbands in memory of those killed in Hamas’s October 7 attacks. Former professional footballer Lior Asulin was noted as being among them.
