Kallas: We will present a new EU Arctic strategy in October
Brussels, September 14 (Hibya) - European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said they are preparing a new strategy, drawing attention to the geopolitical competition and security risks created by climate change in the Arctic region.
European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas emphasized that climate change is opening new sea routes in the region and fueling growing geopolitical competition.
Referring to the activities of actors in the region, Kallas said, "Russia is increasing its military presence in the Arctic region. China is also showing growing interest in the region."
Highlighting the importance of the issue for Europe's security, Kallas said, "Arctic security is European security. Europe must act accordingly."
Kallas concluded her statement by saying, "That is why, in October, we will present a new EU Arctic strategy with security at its core."
