Melania Trump announces ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine for Oleshky
Washington, October 23 (Hibya) - Melania Trump, wife of United States (US) President Donald Trump, announced that Russia and Ukraine had reached a temporary local ceasefire agreement to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians from the Ukrainian city of Oleshky. The ceasefire is scheduled to begin on October 29, 2026.
According to a statement released by the White House on October 23, 2026, Russia and Ukraine agreed, through Melania Trump's initiatives, to temporarily suspend military operations in the southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky. The agreement aims to enable humanitarian aid deliveries to the city and the evacuation of civilians along a designated safe route.
Melania Trump described conditions in Oleshky as severe, noting that most of the remaining residents are elderly people who urgently need medical attention, medication, food and clean water.
Trump said electricity supplies in the city are limited, roads are covered with landmines and military attacks occur regularly. She argued that delivering humanitarian assistance and evacuating elderly residents would not be possible without her intervention.
According to the statement, Melania Trump and her representative worked directly with the Russian and Ukrainian governments to establish the terms of the ceasefire. The parties reached an agreement on its objectives, technical implementation, timing and procedures. Trump stated that she had served as the "exclusive mediator" in the process.
Under the agreement, non-military civilian representatives from both countries are expected to visit Oleshky residents in their homes to assess their needs. Coordinated assistance and transportation will be provided to those wishing to evacuate. Trump said evacuees would be taken to their preferred destinations, noting that some might choose to travel to Russia while others might wish to relocate to other parts of Ukraine.
Trump also announced that she had reached an agreement with a neutral American media organization to monitor and document the activities of Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground. She said this arrangement would play an important role in ensuring that the preferences and requests of families are respected.
The White House statement said the situation in Oleshky had been raised during a private meeting at the "Fostering the Future Together" event held in New York during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Trump said she and her representative had reactivated a previously established communication channel with Russia and Ukraine. The statement noted that efforts had been undertaken to reunite a total of 34 children with their families through six previous reunification processes. Both countries have assigned teams to coordinate the complex implementation stages of the ceasefire and evacuation process, including demining operations.
According to information provided by the White House, approximately 24,000 people lived in Oleshky before the war. The city is located in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine, on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River. An estimated 1,700 to 2,000 people, mostly elderly residents, remain in the city today, along with approximately 50 children.
The statement noted that no official demographic census has been conducted in the city since 2022. It said that much of Oleshky's population had been displaced or evacuated since the beginning of the war, as the city remained on the front line. It also reported that approximately 90 percent of the city's territory was flooded following the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam.
