Qatar calls for consensus on international law
New York, October 30 (Hibya) - Qatar announced its readiness to continue cooperation to advance international law and strengthen the international legal order based on the principles and purposes of the United Nations (UN) Charter.
Al Jazi Rashid Al Nuaimi, a member of Qatar's delegation, reiterated the country's support for the International Law Commission (ILC) in her statement during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly's Sixth Committee.
Al Nuaimi said, "It is important that the Commission's work be based on the practices and views of states and, to the extent possible, reflect different legal traditions and perspectives."
Outlining Qatar's approach to drafting international instruments, Al Nuaimi stated that such instruments should not undermine the independence of national judiciaries, should respect states' constitutions and sovereignty, and should complement existing international agreements. She emphasized the need to establish safeguards against the use of these instruments for political purposes and to allow states sufficient time to review them.
Referring to Qatar's efforts to implement international humanitarian law, Al Nuaimi stated that the country contributes to the development of international law through national, regional and international initiatives.
