Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz issued a statement on the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks carried out in the United States on September 11, 2001. Scholz said that at the time of the attacks he was serving as Hamburg’s Senator for the Interior and that the perpetrators had previously lived in Hamburg as a “sleeper cell”.

Scholz said that the attackers planned the assault while living in the city, stating: “At the time, I was the Senator for the Interior of Hamburg, the city where the suicide pilots had previously lived as a ‘sleeper cell’ and planned their atrocities.”

Noting that the attack also influenced the later stage of his career, Scholz said: “This terrible event also shaped the later stage of my career.”
