Berlin, September 11 (Hibya) - Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a statement marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks that he was serving at the time as Hamburg’s Senator for the Interior, in the city where the attacks were planned.

Scholz said that at the time of the attacks he was serving as Hamburg’s Senator for the Interior and that the perpetrators had previously lived in Hamburg as a “sleeper cell”.
Scholz said that the attackers planned the assault while living in the city, stating: “At the time, I was the Senator for the Interior of Hamburg, the city where the suicide pilots had previously lived as a ‘sleeper cell’ and planned their atrocities.”
Noting that the attack also influenced the later stage of his career, Scholz said: “This terrible event also shaped the later stage of my career.”
