European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen issued a statement on the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks carried out in the United States on September 11, 2001. Von der Leyen said they remember those who lost their lives on the anniversary of the attacks, stating: “Today we remember. We remember that 25 years ago the world stood still.”

Drawing attention to the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the attacks, von der Leyen said: “We remember the 3,000 people who left their homes that morning and never returned.”

Von der Leyen noted that where the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center once stood, two columns of light now rise into the New York skyline, saying: “Where the Twin Towers once stood, two columns of light now rise into the New York sky. They remind us that light prevails even on the darkest days.”
